How well does your staff understand the rules and regulations that govern the provision of, and payment for, hospice care? Do they know:

  • The regulatory requirements associated with the interdisciplinary assessment process and documentation to support hospice eligibility?

  • The importance of determining whether medications and other services are related to the patient's terminal diagnosis, and how to document accordingly?

  • The required elements to support the billing of higher levels of care?

  • How to read and interpret the PEPPER report?

  • The regulatory requirements and the compliance challenges associated with providing hospice care in facilities?

  • How to assure compliance with QAPI and reporting requirements?

  • Explore Local Coverage Determination (LCD) guidelines and their affect on payment and compliant documentation;

  • Explain proper use of hospice assessment tools to improve documentation of evaluate patient eligibility; and,

  • Review Targeted Probe and Educate (TPE), Supplemental Medical Review Contractor (SMRC), and other audits.

The Weatherbee Boot Camp was very valuable for me in my new role in hospice. I already have extensive medical director experience in non-hospice programs. The Boot Camp gave me valuable insight to how I could enhance my experience with a hospice focus. The sessions on physician narratives related to ‘painting an accurate picture’ of a hospice appropriate patient prognosis of six months or less was very helpful, not just for me but for the entire team.
